Hurricane Charley Hits Pine Island
On Friday August 13 2004, Pine Island took a direct hit from Hurricane Charley with winds in excess of 150 mph. Below are some pictures of the devastation it left behind. Thankfully nobody on the Island was killed as a direct result of the storm. The Matlacha Pine Island Fire Control District would like to thank all of the organizations and individuals that helped us get through this tremendous ordeal. It would be impossible to list everyone, however there are a few we would like to mention.
Lee County Sheriffs Office, Honc Construction, Fish and Wildlife, Hialeah Police Department, Plant City Police Department, National Guard, Lehigh Acres Fire Department, Iona McGregor Fire Department, Cape Coral Fire Department, Division of Forestry, Greater Pine Island Water Association, Pike, LCEC, Lee County Emergency Management, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Winn Dixie, Sandy Hook Restaurant, Capt'n Cons Restaurant, Lazy Flamingo, Circle K and all the other individuals that helped out in our Islands time of need.
